Fall, 2011 Auditions

Open Placement Auditions – Students Age 6-18 years

Kennedy High School, 422 Highland Avenue, Waterbury

Principal Orchestra – This is the advanced ensemble of GWYS.  This group is for musicians who have strong ability on their instruments and confidence in reading music.  Typically, these students study privately and have completed several years of ensemble playing.  The intent of this orchestra is to reflect a classical orchestra instrumentation.

Symphonette – This ensemble is for those musicians who have achieved an intermediate level of playing.  These students are comfortable with their instruments and reading music, may have studied privately and/or participated in band/orchestra for several years.

Debut Orchestra – This is the beginner orchestra.  This ensemble is for musicians in the early stages of learning their instrument  and reading music.

Chamber Music opportunities will be offered to motivated students with additional opportunities for performance.

Auditions are held in September and February.  Each student’s musical ability will be evaluated on a yearly basis.  The difficulty of the audition piece selection and the level of mastery he/she has achieved will be considered.  The instrumental needs of each orchestra will determine the student’s placement in the appropriate orchestra.  Comment sheets will be filled out for each musician and mailed to their home prior to the first rehearsal.  There will be no re-auditions until the following semester. 

Musicians will be evaluated on the following:

1.     Use of dynamics, phrasing, and articulation.

2.     Accuracy of notes.

3.     Accuracy of rhythms

4.     Intonation

5.     Sight reading

6.    **Strings only - Bow use.

The Orchestras rehearse most Saturday mornings from September-May and perform a minimum of 2 concerts annually.
