Orchestras

The three GWYS orchestras each have a distinct personality and purpose.  Musicians are placed after audition in the group that most matches the ability and musical maturity of their playing.  Instrumental need, balance, and professional discretion is taken into consideration at the time of placement.  Years of playing, age and/or school grade are not determining factors in the placement of musicians.

Principal Orchestra

This is the advanced ensemble of GWYS. This group is for musicians who have strong ability on their instruments, advanced musicality and skill in reading music, with possible transposing needed. It is recommended that these students study privately and have completed at least several years of ensemble playing. The intent of this orchestra is to reflect classical orchestra instrumentation, with fewer wind and brass seats available.

Symphonette

This orchestra is for those musicians who have achieved an intermediate level of playing. Symphonette musicians should be familiar with the full range of their instrument, be comfortable with reading music, and have a basic understanding of dynamics and keys signatures. Students may have studied privately and/or participated in band or orchestra for several years.

Debut Orchestra

This is the beginner orchestra. Most musicians are in their first few years of ensemble performance and have a basic understanding of rhythm and dynamics. Musicians may not have full command of their instruments and are in the process of learning the different key signatures. Musicians must have at least 6 months on their instrument and must read music, but may be in the early stages of both.
